 History

The Branch was formally approved by the Provincial Taiwan Government to set up in 1981. Under the attentive planning of Taiwan Tea Experiment Station (currently, TRES), preparatory founding works were begun, including 3-year collaboration with Taitung County Government and relevant organizations for purchasing 29.84 hectares of land and completing buildings, facilities as well as experimental farms. In January 1984, Taitung Branch, Tea Research and Extension Station started its official operations, playing as the key role in Tea Research and Development for Eastern Taiwan tea industry.

 

Taitung Branch is under the jurisdiction of Tea Research and Extension Station, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, conducting research and development associated with tea production and marketing in Taitung County, Huanlien County, Pingtung County and Kaoshiung County. Under the supervision of the branch manager, the Branch consists of Tea Agronomy Department, Tea Manufacture Department, Accounting Department and Department of General Affairs, having 8 technical and administrative staff and 18 technical workers.

 

Research and Extension Affairs

1. Breeding and vegetative propagation of superior cultivars.

2.        Improvement of tea cultivation techniques and farm

 management.

3. Studies on pest and disease controls.

4. Improvement of tea manufacturing techniques to increase tea quality.

5. R & D of tea multiple products.

6. R & D of tea farm machinery and manufacturing machinery.

7. Training & education, demonstration, exhibition and publication of miscellaneous extension brochures for tea farmers or consumers.

8. Advisory works on examination of pesticide residues, packaging & grading, and promotion activity.

 

Recent Research and Extension Achievements

1. Establish rationalized fertilizer management systems in tea gardens.

2. Develop cultivated environment for organic tea gardens and popularize its cultivation techniques.

3. Guidance and assistance on the mechanized tea cultivation.

4. Application of tea trimming in regulating tea yields and production periods.

5.Studies on foehn effects on the growth and reproduction of teas, with preventive methods developed.

6.Drought effects on tea yields and relevant control measures.

7.Development of renovated methods for senescent tea gardens.

8.Investigations on tea buds growth inhibition caused by machine plucking and its improvement method.

9.Establishment of regulative techniques for early spring and late winter tea production in eastern Taiwan.

10.Biological control methods for tea disease and insect pests and setting up epidemic situation monitor systems for tea garden in eastern Taiwan.

11. Manufacture methods of lotus tea, fruit tea, and honey aroma green tea

 

Outlook

1.            To enhance the competition ability and sustainable   

management of tea gardens in eastern Taiwan, future prospects are listed as follows

a)   Collecting tea cultivars and wild tea species to set up

 germplasm for the plenitude of basic experimental materials for research purposes.

b)   Improving production models to elaborate integral characteristics of late winter and early spring teas.

c)   Promoting mechanized tea production to reduce costs    

and to increase profits

2.    According to the prerequisite that tea industry ought to

co-operate with tourism to develop characteristic tea products in eastern Taiwan. Regarding tea manufacture, the Branch will devote to linking up local specialties which possess distinct characters and to develop various kinds of special flavor or aroma tea products (e.g. fruit tea, honey-aroma green tea, wild species tea, and pineapple-aroma black tea, etc.).

3. As for guidance and assistance of tea production distinct areas, several important strategies would be conducted as follows

a)   Continue promotion on improving landscape of tea ardens in harmony with the development of leisure tourism in order to attract more tourists visiting tea gardens in Taitung and Hwalien.

b)   Enhance guiding and assisting tea production and manufacture skills of local aborigines so as to promote their incomes.

c)   Enforce assisting tea grading systems, trying to establish sound tea brands and its reputation.

d)   Persist to push the tea strategic alliance, strengthening marketing competition of local tea products for the sustainability of tea industry.
